Breast Surgery Revision

The choice to have a second change in breast form or have your implants replaced for any reason is called a revision, or secondary breast surgery. This may occur shortly after your first operation, or many years down the line. While most patients are very happy with the results of their breast enhancement, some patients find that their results are not optimal and come to Dr. Lowenstein to have their operation re-done for a better outcome. Women may choose to have secondary breast surgery, or breast surgery revision for one or more of several reasons:

  • Capsular Contracture
  • Implant rupture
  • Life changes such as childbirth
  • It’s time for a change

Capsular Contracture

If the natural tissue around your breast implant becomes thickened or tight, your breast can become firm and less attractive. Occasionally, this can be painful. While Dr. Lowenstein’s rate of the occurrence of such contracture is about 5%, national rates from other surgeons can be as high as 20%. Re-operation for capsular contracture requires breast implant replacement and often resection of the affected scar tissue. Replacement may use the same or different types of breast implants depending on the circumstances and patient wishes.

Breast Implant Rupture

Given enough time, all breast implants will leak or rupture. Only diamonds last forever. When addressed at an early stage, breast revision shortly following the detection of an implant rupture can be quite straight forward with minimal discomfort or down time. When a longer period of time has passed between implant leakage and secondary surgery, the operation may be more involved. Patients can choose to change size or shape of their breasts during this procedure, which will most certainly require the use of a different size or style of implant. This is often an easy change and such goals should be discussed with Dr. Lowenstein during your consultation.

Life Changes and Pregnancy

As every women ages, changes in their body, their life, and their lifestyle are bound to occur. With these changes, a breast implant placed an an earlier time may no longer serve the purpose for which it was originally intended. During pregnancy, for example, a woman’s breasts may become larger as the breast tissue responds to hormonal changes. A breast implant placed prior to pregnancy may now provide too much volume after breast feeding, and a change to a smaller implant may be in order. Later in life, other hormone changes may have affect the size, shape, or density of the breast and a woman may want a revision of her previous breast enhancement at that time.
